A B O U T
I create softly detailed drawings of wildlife using pastel mediums inspired by my love of animals since childhood.
In creating my drawings I focus on the sentient and gentle elements of the subject
whilst also portraying a realistic and truthful impression of the animals
as behind the softly drawn details are themes relating to their startling vulnerability and challenges, their futures uncertain
where many may no longer exist in as few as 10 years’ time.
I hope to bring these contrasts together through my work in order to create a realistic yet beautiful artwork.
I choose to limit backgrounds in order to evoke an immediate emotion or feeling based on the animal only, which in turn
challenges me to recreate this through the subject alone. I especially love to create emotion through their eyes.

I use professional artist’s-grade pastel pencils containing pure pigment working on an archival
acid-free pastelmat surface which allows the artworks to last many years ahead
without risk of fading or discolouring, enabling a reassuring investment in my original drawings.
Teaching myself to use pastels through trial and error I fell in love with their qualities as a drawing medium.
These pastels also contain a slightly less ratio of binder to pigment with a high permanence value.

When choosing subjects to draw I look for a connection or emotion to the animal
which I then hope to replicate along with my own interpretation.
This has resulted in a portfolio of sincere and poignant wildlife and animal portraits.
"........this strange, magical medium, essentially, just millions of particles of coloured dust clinging to a surface"
